The Millbrook Society

Annual Plan for 2008

Scope: This document provides a listing and brief description of the activities and events that are expected to be accomplished during the year by members of our Society.

Objective:  This plan is established to provide focus and guidance to the Board of Directors, division leaders and other active members of the Society.  It will also provide information that may interest inactive members and members of the general public who may consider joining the Society and participating in the various activities that we have planned for the year.

Status: The Board of Directors is continually reviewing this plan.  It is flexible and may be modified during the year, as interests and events may require.  It addresses the various events and activities that the Society plans for this year that support the goals of the Society.

Planned Activities: The following activity areas are included in this plan.  This is not a closed list and other activities may also be added at a later date, as interest arises.

I Education

A.                                        Intern Program

·       Several interns are planning a beginning involvement in our archaeology program.

·       Interns will participate in Graeme Park and Craven Hall events as they are scheduled and invitations are received.  This involvement is expected to add to their learning about early American life way skills and period interpretations, i.e., costuming, dancing, and cooking.  They are scheduled to participate in a period interpretation of a Colonial Christmas at the church, and several senior members will also be involved in this event.  Other costumed interpretations may be scheduled as appropriate.

·       Interns are planning visits to historic sites and possibly area museums.

     B.                               Active Membership

·       There are interests in visiting other historic sites, this year.

     C.                                General Membership

1.                                       The Grist

The Society plans to continue to publish our journal, four times during the year, as we have done in the past.  We expect to draw material from the several active members who enjoy contributing material to it.  Contributions of short items and pictures are also solicited.  A procedure and checklist are in place to assist those interested in contributing written material or editing.  Anyone interested in helping with editing of the journal will be readily welcomed.

II. Archaeology and Research

A.                            Moland Site

Archaeology will continue at this site beginning in April under the leadership of David Shannon.  The work at this site will consist of screening, washing and cataloging of artifacts from the graded soil piles that were removed from the north and south lawns of the house.  Excavation on the west side of the “Well House” will continue in order to record artifacts and features in their current historic context, in anticipation of future grading in this area.

B.                               Scout (John Fitch) Site

Archaeology will open in April under the leadership of Gary Hanley.  The goal this year will be the continued investigation of the stone foundation behind the house to establish its size, age and possible use through study of structural features, existing building materials, and artifacts found within and outside of this building feature.

C.                            Log College Project

There is no archaeology planned at the Log College monument site this year.  Several active members are involved with the research of William Tennent and his Log College, and this research is ongoing.  Repair and cleaning of the Log College monument’s bronze plaques is being pursued as well as raising funds to accomplish this task.  It is hoped through necessary research and documentation to place the Log College monument site on the Bucks County’s register of historic places.  The placement of a new state historical marker on the site is also being investigated.

III. Museum

A.                            Display Cabinets

Updating of the display cabinets will continue to include other items of interest.

B.                            Archival Reorganization

The process of reviewing and updating the Society’s inventory of historic documents and artifacts, which reside in the museum, will begin this year.

C.                              Cleanup/Maintenance

There is a consideration to clean or replace the carpet in the museum and painting of the museum to include the upper display cabinet doors.  We welcome any assistance, both financial and physical.

IV. Publicity

A.                               Local Activities

We expect that other local organizations and historic sites will be scheduling activities this year.  Society members should look for those activities where our participation would be welcomed and where we could gain further publicity for the Society.   Anyone having knowledge of such events should bring them to the attention of other active members.

V. Fund Raising and Utilization

     A.                            Hatboro Video Project

We will continue to facilitate as well as contribute to the making of the History of Hatboro DVD in conjunction with Arrival Video’s Scott Randolph.  Millbrook will continue to provide Arrival Video access to documents and photographs in our archives as needed.  The production of the DVD is now projected to be completed this year.  Millbrook will receive a portion of the proceeds for each DVD sold.  This income will enable Millbrook to maintain and pursue programs of interest for its membership.
