We will keep our Web site visitors informed about the events and discoveries at our archaeology sites again , as archaeology gets underway for the 2008 season. Notice: The archaeology dig scheduled at the Scout Property for Saturday the 16th of August has been changed to Thursday the 14th of August, also the one scheduled for Friday the 29th of August has been changed to Tuesday the 26th of August. Archaeology at the Scout Property has begun. As the season progresses, we will report on what is accomplished and the results. We have returned to the Moland House, George Washington’s Headquarters in Warwick, for the 12th year. Work began at the "forties addition". The previous plans were changed to meet the need to support the restoration of the house and grounds. We are looking for an extension of the foundation feature that was found in 2003. As the season progresses, we will report on the events at the site. This year the Society is also scheduled to screen the piles of soil, at the Moland House, that has been graded off of the north and south lawns. We will also now be screening soil that was collected at several other locations around the house. This work is being done to collect any artifacts that may have been removed with the grading and other digging. There will be no traditional archaeology taking place on screening days. All those who wish to participate are welcome. The screening schedule is now posted on our archaeology schedule page. See also the regular archaeology schedule for directions and contacts. The first scheduled screening day of each month coincides with an Open House at Moland. Special Event - There is a special event now scheduled that is not on the schedule page. The Society will be screening soil, at the Moland site, that will be removed from a trench that will be dug from the Moland House to the carriage house. This trench is being dug so as to place a conduit for electrical wires underground through the driveway. We know that a cart-way also ran along the same path and we will be screening the dirt as well as taking photo's of the trench walls. All active members are welcome to join us as there will be a large quantity of soil to screen. The event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 17th, begining at 9 am. There will probably not be significant soil to screen before 10 am. On April 29th, we performed screening of soil at the Moland House. It was a banner day. We found two coins in the soil that was taken from the south side of the flagstone porch of the forties addition. The one coin was an 1862, silver three-cent piece. The other was a 1794 United States liberty penny. 1792 was the first year that the United States minted coins. Our coins were only minted by the states before that time. We also found a Native American spear point. Many pins were found in this soil, as before, with most of them being colonial. |
